Travelling by train in Ukraine Travelling by train is a comfortable, enjoyable, safe and affordable way of travel. Train network covers all the main cities and most towns throughout the country as well as connects Ukraine with many other destinations in Europe and Asia (Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Baltic States, Poland, Germany, Hungary, Check Republic, Austria and others).
Most trains in Ukraine offer 3 types of compartments: 1st class or soft class compartment with two berths. In 80% of trains both berths are located opposite to each other and serve both for sitting and sleeping purposes. Some trains, international ones in particular, have two berths located one above another. Some 1st class compartments offer a water sink and/or TV, however these facilities are subject to confirmation upon purchase of the ticket. Central climate control system is in place throughout the 1st class carriages. 2nd class compartment ("coupee") with 4 berths - 2 lower and 2 upper ones 3rd class compartments (platzcard) are not recommended for foreign travellers
Buying Rail tickets in Ukraine
We strongly recommend to buy rail tickets in advance . Please note that according to the local policy, internal rail tickets in Ukraine cannot be booked earlier than 40 days before the scheduled day of travel. Certain routs, in high season in particular, are quickly sold out. It is required to show passport in order to book rail tickets directly on the train station or in central rail ticket office.
